In Henry David Thoreau’s â€Å"Walden† Thoreau says that If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.† (Thoreau pg. 930) To Thoreau and many other Transcendentalists, being your own person or individualism was of utmost importance. Thoreau’s true meaning behind this statement is if someone acts differently than you or in a strange manner, they may have different values and norms in their life than your own. Those people are simply reacting in a way that their values deem as morally right. Thoreau greatly emphasizes the importance of being different and not conforming to normal societal ways. She talks about the hardships of being a slave and especially being a woman in this world of slavery. When they told me my new-born baby was a girl, my heart was heavier than it had ever been before (pg. 830). She states that being a man in a slave’s world of hard but being a woman is much worse. â€Å"They have wrongs, and sufferings, and mortifications peculiarly their own.† (pg. 831). She fears that her babe will be sold to a slave trader and she would rather the babe die and be buried than to lose her to the trade. She doesn’t want her baby girl to be born into her life, a life of pain and suffering. She knows the baby will live a life of slavery. Her baby girl had no name at birth and was bound to acquire a Christian name. There is a fierce love that she has for her children and his drives her to create a better life for them, possibly even gain their freedom from slaver y. 4. In Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville, Mr. Bartleby will not leave the law firms office after repeatedly being told to do so.
